We know the economy is bad, but really? As reported in USA Today… um… today, retail site weddings are on the up. The article mentions TJ Maxx and Taco Bell as recent wedding destinations. Um, we think, no. Saying “I do” in the same place that someone else said the same thing when asked if they wanted their meal supersized is, well, sort of corny. Don’t go there. However, we really dig it when the wedding party cruises on over to the local McDonald’s or Burger King for some cute between-the-ceremony-and-reception photos. Why? Cause we all know you were up at 6 a.m. getting your hair done, that you didn’t eat anything all day, and that everybody loves french fries. These fast food places add a hint of color and Americana to your portfolio of wedding day photos, which in some cases, when done well, tell the story of “your day.” We love what Seattle Photographer Daniel Sheehan, of A Beautiful Day Photography, did with this wedding shot. How sweet it is to be loved… and enjoying an ice cream cone at McDonald’s.

Wedding photographers exist for one main reason: to help document the big day. They usually show up early, as the bride is perfecting her makeup, or the groom is tying his tie. They stay for the ceremony, the cocktail hour, the reception, and often don’t leave until the couple does, getting that one last “and we’re off!” shot. Those clumsy Kodak disposable on the tables are sooooo yesterday! Right now a hot new trend in the wedding arena is having a photo booth at the reception. We look at it as just one more way to remember your favorite guests in colorful a light! Be warned, however, this is not–I repeat no, not ever–supposed to take the place of hiring a real wedding photographer. Seeing your college roommate up close in her drunken fish face will not bring tears to your eyes on your 25th wedding anniversary… real, professional photographs will. But, if fits your budget, the photo booth is not a bad way to spice up your wedding. We spoke with Jeff Johnson, owner of Good Times Photo Booth Rental in San Diego, and he said the popularity stems from a new relaxed way of looking at wedding receptions. “Weddings can be stuffy to begin with,” he said. “This really loosens people up. It’s an icebreaker because people really have fun with it and act silly.” Johnson booked 60 weddings last year (helloooo busy! there are only 52 weeks in a year!) and is gearing up for another busy wedding season by buying more booths for his business. Once seen as just an option on the wedding/engagement must-do menu, engagement photographs are fast becoming an essential piece of the action. Brides and grooms like to use these photos in their save-the-dates, on their wedding websites, or for hometown-newspaper wedding announcements. In fact, because engagement shots are so popular nowadays, many photographers will include engagement shots in their wedding photography packages. The shots, often taken in natural settings like parks, beaches, or backyards– ah, the magic of natural lighting!– can be a great way to announce your upcoming wedding.
